PostSubject: SFS replica attempt (CAP kit)   Fri May 20, 2011 4:45 am

As I said in my introductory post, I am working in a SFS replica helmet. I am doing it out of a CAP kit I got a few months ago, and the idea is to replicate as much as possible the look and feel of the Dave M helmet.

I took some ideas from a tutorial I found and kept some time ago by Boba Maker. Only after the work was advanced I realized, thanks to Rolf, that the tutorial might not have been the best tool to follow. This cause I gave the helmet a hand painted texture by applying a sloppy coat of acrylic paint between the green HDPE like coat, and the white one.

I think it gives the helmet some sort of an edge, but then, it is not very accurate.
Anyway, as ANH buckets have some sort of brushed like texture going horizontally, specially on the back, I guess it is not THAT bad.

Cut, trimmed and assembled to look like the Dave M helmet (as much as possible), I will be finishing it with handpainted details, cracks, bumps, paint leaks, and even some mods to the pull that maybe you can notice.

I will also finish the interior trying to replicate the look of ANH helmets, with green, red and white paint, leaf foam, elastic and all...

This is how it looks atm. Still will replace some parts and detail more some others.

Some stuff I now is not 100% is the color green for HDPE, trimming of earcaps, and shine of white paint, among other details.

So, what do you think?

So... wondering, a few visits but no comments.
Maybe there is nothing to say yet since the project is still in a very basic stage.

So...

Here it is a little upgrade. The main paint job is almost done.
I just need to re-touch here and there a few little things, and then, ready for aging and weathering.

So, what do you think?

Ok I can now?

Looks good to me. What white are you using? Looks a little flat.

Yes...

Paint was some kind of gloss Rustoleum (not professional silver can).
It looks very flat actually.
seems like the acrylic paint I used to give the texture* to the bucket sucked out the shinny finish of the paint.
But I am planning on adding a thick layer of shinny transparent finish on top.
Hopefully, that will do the trick.

This is a learning project for me, as always, since there are many things I will improve in my next build.

Thx for your comments!

Saludos

*BTW, the texture is the one seen on the SFS cap and back... like brushed. But I think I over did it. :S

Here are a few more pictures.
The glossy finish is not done yet.
I think that the texture of the acrilic paint I used under the final white coat makes it difficult for paint to clearly reflect light. Also, the acrilic paint itself seems to have reacted with the rustoleum paint since I sprayed some on scrap plastic and it was very shinny. Not like the bucket.
So...

This I will try to fix with a glossy coat of clear gloss spray.

Also, the inside is not 100% done. Still want to age the chin straps and snaps. And need to fix the green lenses material the correct way. Maybe try to get some more accurate material.

Finally, the green I used to emulate the HDPE was not really accurate. It is way toooooo green. I wasn't too happy with it, but only realized it was very green later on the build. Thought I could fix it with a coat of white mist, but it did not work.

Now, chipping, newspapering, some scrubbing and rubber skid marking.

I have very high hopes for this project. But I also realize there is a lot of room for improvement. It is only my 2nd Replica attempt. And still on the work bench is my SE TD out of a CfO kit.

So... What do you think now?

OK... here is some more progress I wanted to share with you.
Still not done 100% but you can already see the face of the Set for Stun helmet showing around the corner...

Coming along nicely, sir! Are the chippings "real" or painted on?

Thx!!
Chips are real. I painted the bucket green, masked it with liquid latex then used acrylic paint to give it some texture, and finally painted it white over it all.
:D

If you don't want to take apart and re fit the helmet, you could just remove the brow trim and carefully trim a little off the cap with a sharp pair of plastic trimming scissors.

A little update...

Trimmed a bit of the cap as suggested and now it has a completely new face. A lot more Set for Stun...
